Everyone’s waiting for 'Kambakkht Ishq'

Posted by Mohan Desai On 1:19 PM 0 comments
He was written off after the debacle of "Chandni Chowk To China" and "8X10 Tasveer", but Akshay Kumar is back to entertain audiences with his full-on masala act in the action-thriller "Kambakkht Ishq" that experts hope will pull the industry out of the dumps."You would be foolish to write him off," said Anees Bazmee, who has delivered two superhits "Singh Is Kinng" and "Welcome" with Akshay. "Don't forget that he is the same man who has been the darling of the masses and given so many back-to-back money spinners. He cannot be penalised for one 'Chandni Chowk To China' throughout his life."After "Chandni Chowk...", Akshay suffered another setback in the form of Nagesh Kukunoor's "8X10 Tasveer"."'8X10 Tasveer' was never meant to be blockbuster material to begin with, even though critics insisted on calling it 'the Akshay Kumar' film. Also, a terrible climax was the major reason for the film to flop, not Akshay's acting. In fact, he was the lone saving grace of the film," said a trade analyst. In the much-awaited "Kambakkht Ishq", releasing on July 3, Akshay plays a Hollywood stuntman with an international set-up that boasts Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallon, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh."This is a film for the masses but with a rich international feel to it that would break the mass versus class barrier," said Sajid Nadiadwala, the man behind the multi-crore movie, "We have the best of both the worlds in the film with Kareena Kapoor playing a supermodel. The Akshay-Kareena combination is the one to watch out for.""Akshay is a superstar and he is here to stay. Let 'Kambakkht Ishq' release and we will see it for ourselves," said Sajid Khan who has roped him in for his second directorial venture "Houseful".However, the usual 'Akshay Kumar frenzy' is missing even though the film is less than a fortnight away from release."Let's not read too much into it. Akshay is too big a star to be worried about such minor things. And why are we forgetting that he is the same man who in the last three years has seen 21 films of his getting released out of which 17 have been hits."He is the most consistent actor, star and a lot more than that. Just because one film of his doesn't take a kickstart as expected, people out there have started making judgments," said Vipul Shah, who directed Akshay in the hit "Namastey London".As the countdown begins for "Kambakkht Ishq", Shah has the last word."I can recount 100 such cases when someone has been pulled down so badly. A few months back, it happened to Himesh Reshammiya for 'Karzzzz'. Earlier, after 'Saawariya', Sanjay Leela Bhansali was said to be finished."Hurman Baweja got to hear so much due to 'Love Story 2050' while after 'Drona', Abhishek was written off. This is sheer cynicism at play but mind you, one film cannot make or break anyone. With 'Kambakkht Ishq', the industry would get the much-needed respite."

Akshay to romance Katrina again

Posted by Mohan Desai On 12:18 PM 0 comments

Stunt hero Akshay Kumar and serene beauty Katrina Kaif share a sizzling on-screen chemistry. In the past few years, they have delivered hits like ‘Namastey London’, ‘Welcome’ and ‘Singh Is King. In spite of their success, they parted away and began to sign films opposite other actors. Their chemistry with other co-star did not click at the box-office and failure again brought the couple together. Akshay Kumar after his unsuccessful pairing with Deepika Padukone in ‘Chandni Chowk To China’ and Katrina Kaif after she failed to spell magic with her own beau Salman Khan in ‘Yuuvraaj’ shift their choice to the earlier one. When director Priyandarshan was making a choice of heroine for his next venture, ‘De Dhana Dhan’ opposite Akki, Akshay quickly recommended Katrina’s name as he again wanted to repeat the super screen chemistry. Priyan is happy to sign Katrina opposite Akshay and the duo is currently shooting in Singapore.

Akshay Kumar pips SRK as top taxpayer

Posted by Mohan Desai On 4:43 PM 0 comments
Not only did the top ten earners pay 17.7% more by way of taxes than in the previous year, but the industry has thrown up a new ‘Hero No 1′. Akshay Kumar, who paid a whopping Rs 31 crore to the I-T department, narrowly pipped Shah Rukh Khan (Rs 30.99 crore) to the title of Bollywood’s highest taxpayer of 2008-09. The top ten Bollywood stars together paid Rs 107 crore as taxes while the same set had paid Rs 90.90 crore in 2007-08 when the economy was booming. The other two Khans - Salman and Saif Ali - were at number three and four, having paid Rs 14 crore and Rs 8.6 crore respectively.
As far as taxes go, Bollywood’s Jodi No 1 was Saif Ali and his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor. Kareena was placed at No 7 with a deposit of Rs 3.7 crore in the tax kitty. The duo clearly beat the Bachchans - Abhishek and Aishwarya - who stood at No 8 and No 6 respectively. Surprisingly, yesteryear superstar Rajesh Khanna continues to be among Bollywood’s big tax payers, coming in at No 5 after paying Rs 6.87 crore - ahead of the Big B (Rs 1.25 crore), who slipped to the 10th rank from No 7 last year. Khanna had paid Rs 11.90 crore last year, the third highest after his son-in-law Akshay Kumar (No 2) and SRK (No 1). The details of Khanna’s business operations were not available. While SRK had paid Rs 31.50 crore, Akshay trailed behind him with a deposit of Rs 12.50 crore.
At No 9 this year is singer-actor Himesh Reshammiya, who paid taxes to the tune of Rs 3 crore. Notable among those missing from the top 10 list is Salman Khan’s current flame and industry favourite Katrina Kaif. Aishwarya Rai, on the other hand, has improved her ranking from No 9 last year to No 6. Both Kareena’s rise (No 10 last year) and Aishwarya’s have been at the cost of theBig B and son Abhishek. Last year, Abhishek was placed at No 5.

Salman Khan proposes to Asin on one knee.
Akshay Kumar seeks treasure in the Bahamas.
John Abraham and Katrina Kaif hit grad school.
Kareena Kapoor turns into a fashion catalogue.
All this and more, this summer in Bollywood. Read on:
Kambakkth Ishq
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora and Aftab Shivdasani
Director: Sabbir Khan
Plot: Somewhere in Hollywood, a cocky stuntman (Akshay Kumar) and a scalding hot (headed) model (Kareena Kapoor) forge a love-hate relationship. What entails? Why 100 per cent desi romance, of course!
Pros: A lot of big-budget gimmickry is at work. Apart from a surplus of bikini-clad bodies, high-profile thrills and glitzy production values including a $4000 dress on its tab, the legendary Italian Stallion?Sylvester Stallone teams up with Wild Things hottie Denise Richards to do his bit in this no-stone-left-unturned affair.
Cons: Lavish budgets do not guarantee blockbusters. Akshay should know. His year began with the debacle called Chandni Chowk To China.

FIR registered against Akshay Kumar

The Vakola police registered an FIR against actor Akshay Kumar, his wife Twinkle Khanna and the organisers of Lakme Fashion Week late on Saturday. Akshay, the brand ambassador of Levi's jeans, unveiled its Unbuttoned brand at the Lakme Fashion Week on Tuesday at the Grand Hyatt, Santa Cruz. A social worker, Anil Nair, then submitted a written application to the police, urging them to book the actor and show organisers for indecent, vulgar and obscene behaviour. "We saw newspaper clippings and video footage of the show before registering an FIR under Section 294 of the IPC. A public prosecutor was also consulted,'' senior inspector S Neklikar said. The offence is bailable. "We will now record statements of people in the audience. Arrests won't take place immediately.'' Section 294 refers to doing any obscene act in public or singing or reciting any obscene song in public. If convicted, the accused can face imprisonment that may extend to three months, or a fine, or both. "We want to ensure that the case stands in court. We will examine related material and take the opinion of several legal experts,'' an officer said. Akshay, who's in South Africa at present, was not available for comment despite repeated attempts. Those present at the fashion show said Akshay had walked half the ramp at which point a model went up to the actor and tried to unbutton his jeans. The actor refused and moved towards his wife Twinkle, seated in the audience, and asked her to unbutton it.

In full view of the cameras and public glare, Akshay Kumar was unzipped by wifey Twinkle Khanna at Lakme India Fashion Week in Mumbai.Bollywood stars brought in a lot of glam and oomph to the gala event in Mumbai. At Tarun Tahilani ’s exclusive Levi’s show on day 4 of Lakme India Fashion Week, the Levi’s brand ambassador Akshay Kumar turned out to be the ultimate show stopper. Dressed in sleeveless green Levi’s T-shirt, jaded blue jeans, leather boots and sun glasses, Akshay walked the ramp in true macho style. Everything was going expectedly until Akshay decided spring a surprise when one of the models on the ramp stepped forward to unzip Akshay’s denims.
But Akshay said no to her by waving his one finger and took everyone by surprise when he asked his wife to do so. The actor stepped down from the ramp and walked to wife Twinkle sitting in the front row and asked her to unzip him.Twinkle blushed momentarily, but Akshay took her hands and asked her to do the act. And she did so, invoking loud cheers from the crowd.About this unzipping-unbuttoning episode Akshay is quoted as saying: “There is nothing wrong in it. Everybody unbuttons himself or gets unbuttoned by someone. What's the big deal about it?”While it did appear a planned act, but Akshay didn’t care a hoot. “It's great to be unbuttoned by your wife,” the actor quipped

8x10 Tasveer music has rap, rock and soul

Posted by Mohan Desai On 1:02 PM 0 comments
8x10 TasveerMusic Director: Salim-Sulaiman and BohemiaLyrics: Irfan Siddique, Sameer and BohemiaSingers: Vishal Dadlani, Mohit Chouhan, Tulsi Kumar, Neeraj Shridhar and BohemiaRating: ***
Riding high on the success of Fashion and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, the musical duo of brothers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant are ready with the soundtrack of Akshay Kumar-starrer 8x10 Tasveer and they seem to have brought together quite a different genre.
They have also presented a mix of both fast-paced peppy numbers and free-flowing, soft melodies.
The first song Aaja maahi, crooned by Neeraj Shridhar and Tulsi Kumar, starts with a western feel and English lyrics. Even though the words lack punch, the song is melodious and worth listening.
The remix version of this song adds nothing but beats to the original.
Up next is Haafiz khuda, which has all the qualities to win listeners' hearts with its soulful, melodious music and free-flowing vocals by Mohit Chauhan. In this number, Mohit is joined by Tulsi Kumar behind the mike. The rendition is bound to make listeners sit up and take notice.
Haafiz khuda too has a remixed version, but the original is more appealing.
An Akshay Kumar film and a rap number seem to go hand in hand these days. After teaming up with Bohemia in Chandni Chowk To China, the actor has shared vocals once again with the US-based hip-hop and rap star in 8X10 Tasveer.
The song " I got the picture" is a peppy number with the same feel of the rap song in Chandni Chowk....
The remix of the same track, which is high on beats, is sure to be a hit on the DJ consoles.
Kuchh is tarah, which is once again in Mohit Chauhan's and Tulsi Kumar's voice, is a hummable number that pulls one's heart strings. Soothing to the ears, this romantic track brings out the best in Chauhan.
The remix version too doesn't disappoint with appropriate musical arrangements.
Easily the best song of the album, Nazaara hai sets the adrenalin pumping with its strong musical backing and powerful vocals by Vishal Dadlani of the composer duo Vishal and Shekhar.
The number is soaked in the flavour of rock music. The predominance of the electric guitar, especially in the middle of the song, makes it a sure shot hit with music buffs.
The remix of Nazaara hai is average, nowhere close to the original.
On the whole, Salim-Sulaiman have kept up their good work in 8x10 Tasveer and are definitely emerging as one of the best in the business.

Akshay Kumar demands 45 crore per film

Posted by Mohan Desai On 1:39 PM 0 comments
Akshay Kumar who is riding high in the industry has made news for his whopping price demand for his next film. Akshay has refused to do a film for his Mohra director Rajiv Rai unless he pays him his dues of a massive 45 crore.
Akshay has ruined Rajiv Rai’s plans of making a comeback in the industry with his friend Akshay Kumar. Now the film has been put on hold because of Akshay’s demands for 45 crore.
Akshay had initially given the film a nod and Rajiv Rai had moved from his Los Angeles home to Mumbai for the proceedings. Rajiv had also registered three titles Do or Die, To Do or Die and Heat. But when Akshaty spoke to the producer regarding the money details Rai was shocked to see Akshay demanding a percentage of the profit along with few other rights related to the film. This totaled up to nearly 45 crore. Given this the total budget of the film shot up to Rs 80 – 90 crore which the producer knew he would never recover. So Rai will not go ahead and make his dealilngs with Akshay and is now planning on making a film with Aamir Khan which will be a period film in English scripted by a Hollywood director

The distributor of `Chandni Chowk to China' in Nepal has received threats from some people in Kathmandu as one of the shots in the film suggests that Lord Buddha was born in India. Rohan Sippy, who produced the movie, came to know of the threat calls on Friday afternoon. Sippy told TOI: "It is mentioned in one scene of `Chandni Chowk to China' that Buddha was born in India, a statement that has been deemed false in Nepal. It was never our intention to hurt the sentiments of the people of Nepal or anyone else for that matter. We would like to unconditionally apologise for any offence caused due to the error.''

But he’s optimistic about his next, Namastey London (NL) , the film where he made a connect with his desi -ness. “It’s interesting how the idea for this movie was born,” says Akshay. “I was narrating an incident to Vipul (Shah) – something that my friend had experienced – and he found it interesting enough to make a movie of it. Of course, he adapted the story to cinematic requirements.”

The Republic Day that just went by has had a greater impact on Akshay Kumar than any previous ‘flag’ day ever has. Reason? He feels he’s grown closer to his Indian roots than ever before. And the feelings of idealism and ‘Indianness’ are surging within him like a new source of adrenalin. And a few damp squibs in the form of Jaan-e-Mann and Bhagam Bhag aren’t going to dampen Akki’s spirits. “Every film cannot be a winner” he tells us. “You win some, you lose some. It’s all part of the game.”

Akshay Kumar-starrer Chandni Chowk to China has earned Rs 33 crore in the first three days of its release at the domestic box office RS.12 crore less than what the previous Akshay Kumar film, Singh is Kinng, made in its opening weekend. Co-producer Warner Brothers expects the film to earn Rs 100 crore, including ticket revenues from overseas markets, two top executives in Warner Brothers said. movie
has been produced by Warner Brothers and Ramesh Sippy. Chandni Chowk To China was reportedly made at a cost of over Rs 80 crore, including marketing expenses. The film got the widest release for a Bollywood film, releasing in over 135 screens in more than 50 markets in North America. It is released with 1,400 prints, globally. But multiplex operators said that they witnessed a dip in occupancy levels and advanced bookings by Monday. "The movie is comparable to SRK’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, but cannot be compared with the success of Singh is Kinng and Ghajini at the domestic box office," said a senior executive with a leading cinema chain. National Association of Motion Picture Exhibitors president Shashank Raizada said that the producers may have earned Rs 33 crore in revenues. "There are minimum guarantees that distributors take from some cinemas. Also, the film did decent business in the past weekend, with 80-90% occupancies in most cinemas." Last year, Singh is Kinng earned an estimated Rs 45 crore on the domestic box office in the opening weekend, while Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi made an estimated Rs 60 crore in the first three days worldwide. Post-release, Chandni Chowk to China received criticism for weak storyline. The film is pegged as Bollywood’s first Kung Fu comedy and was also the first Indian film to be shot at the Great Wall of China.

Akki’s award goes to Aamir

After all the drama and exchange of annoyance that took place on stage of an award ceremony recently, it was Akshay Kumar, who saved the show with his kindheartedness. The actor took many by surprise when he refused to accept ‘The Most Popular Actor’ award saying that not him, but Aamir Khan deserved the award for his work in Ghajini. Our sources say, “Akshay Kumar saw Ghajini in New York when he was there for the premiere of Chandni Chowk to China and was floored by Aamir’s performance and effort. On his return to India from London, Akshay saw Singh Is Kinng in the flight and thought that Aamir’s effort was far more commendable. Receiving the award Akshay said, “I feel humble that I have won the award for ‘The Most Popular Actor’. I have waited for this award since a long time. However, I recently saw Ghajini and thought that Aamir deserves this award more. I know that Aamir does not accept awards, but I want him to accept this as a symbol of love that people have for him. I want him to enjoy the award as much as I would have done.” When contacted Akshay Kumar said, “I did something that I genuinely felt. I really do not wish to talk about it.”

Amid loud Punjabi drum beats, firecrackers going off and squeals of joy from the eager audience, Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone descended at a shopping mall here from a huge hot air balloon to promote their action-adventure film Chandni Chowk To China, releasing on Friday.

AKSHAY KUMAR REFUSE TOACCEPT STAR SCREEN AWARD

Posted by Mohan Desai On 1:01 PM 0 comments
Akshay Kumar the undisputed king of Bollywood carries a grief with him of not winning the Best Actor Award ever in his life. But the actor surprised everyone with his humbleness and humility when he refused to accept the Most Popular Actor Award for his performance in Singh Is Kinng. Akshay's argued that Aamir Khan deserved it more for his performance in Ghajini.

Actor Akshay Kumar has topped the list of taxpayers as he paid the highest income tax in Bollywood of Rs 19 crore. Akshay has even surpassed Shah Rukh Khan who paid Rs 15 crore.
Actor Hrithik Roshan is so far third on the celebrity tax payer list, with a payment of Rs 8 crore and Aamir Khan comes fourth, having paid Rs 7 crore as income tax.
Akshay is referred to as the current Box Office king, following a series of hit films including Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Welcome and the most recent Singh Is Kinng.
Singh is Kinng had a record opening in India and overseas. The film was one of the highest grossers in 2008.
Meanwhile, audiences in India and abroad are looking forward to Akshay's forthcoming release Chandni Chowk To China opposite Deepika Padukone.
