Sanjay Dutt plays Munnabhai on campaign trail

Posted by Mohan Desai On 1:00 PM 1 comments

Sanjay Dutt is making the most of his old Munnabhai wardrobe and is using it to lure in the crowds as he campaigns for the Samajwadi Party in Bihar.

Though the Supreme Court has ruled that Dutt cannot contest, he has been appointed General Secretary to the party so he can stay close to politics and campaign for them. And the actor is pulling out all the stops for the campaign. On a recent visit to Bihar, he brought out his Munnabhai avatar from his hit films Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai. He even addressed the crowds with dialogues from the movies. A source present, says, “He was on full swing and used his famous dialogues from Munnabhai to drive the crowd crazy. The actor was quite efficient in engaging the masses.”Sanjay even compared the potential voters to Circuit, his sidekick played by Arshad Warsi, from the Munnabhai series. The source adds, “The line of his speech which had the most effect was when he said, ‘In my film I had one Circuit but here, I can see a thousand Circuits, who have come to support me and SP. It’s nice to see a lot of affection and though I am not contesting this time, I hope to the next time’.”His exact words were: "Munnabhai mein sirf ek Circuit tha. Yahan par jitne hazaron log maujood hain, saare mere Circuit hain."Sanjay was meant to contest for the Samajwadi Party in Lucknow. His ambition of emulating his father and sister by going to the Lok Sabha was shattered on March 31 when the Supreme Court ruled that he could not contest since he had been convicted in the 1993 bomb blasts case. Sanjay was convicted by an anti-terror court for possessing a prohibited weapon.

The Apex Court, Supreme Court of India has turned the request of actor Sanjay Dutt’s to stay his conviction by Tada court in Mumbai under the Arms Act. It was a quite a disappointment for Sanjay Dutt who was keen to contest the general elections for the Lok Sabha seat from Lucknow.
The bench headed by the Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan said that at the time of passing the order that they were ” not inclined to suspend his conviction. “The bench further said that ” It is not a fit case to grant stay of conviction. Of course, the bench admitted that actor was not a “habitual criminal”and that his father, Sunil Dutt was an actor of great repute.
Sanjay Dutt cited the case of former cricket player Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is BJP Lok Sabha MP from the Amritsar constituency. The apex court had stayed the conviction of allowing him to contest the by-election from Amritsar. The bench, of course, was of the view that the offence committed by Sanjay Dutt was of a more serious nature as compared to that of Sidhu, who had had been convicted in case of road rage.
Sanjay Dutt was very unhappy about the decision. He said he was not leaving Lucknow and that this was his hometown. ” I am not leaving Lucknow. This is my hometown and any candidate who stands from here will be my candidate. This is my seat and will always be mine,”he said to the Times of India.
Sanjay Dutt, of course, said he had complete faith in the judiciary and that he would honor the verdict given by the SC.
The Samajwadi Partyhas always was saying that in case Sanjay Dutt is not permitted to stand for elections, they would field his wife Manyata Dutt from Lucknow. Sanjay Dutt has said that her candidature will be decided by Mulayam Singh as well as Amar Singh and that it would not be his decision

The bonding between Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt is getting stronger by the day. Not only has Dutt agreed to do Devgan's comedy directed by Rohit Shetty, in spite of his decision to concentrate on his newly - started political career, Dutt also decided to allot dates to Shetty's film All The Best immediately. However, the first of schedule of All The Best which was supposed to start from March 5 has been moved to March 10, leading to speculation whether there's trouble in paradise. But Dharam Oberoi, the CEO of Sanjay Dutt films quickly quells all controversy. "Before people start imagining there's a problem between Mr. Dutt and Mr. Devgan let me say the dates have been kindly re-adjusted by Mr. Devgan to accommodate the last schedule of Blue which now begins on March 1." Apparently, coordinating Sanjay's dates with Akshay Kumar for Blue has been a problem. Says Oberoi, "They're both busy artistes. Yes it has been a problem coordinating their dates. In fact the last schedule from March 1 has been arranged to accommodate Akshay Kumar because he has to leave. Ajay's film was to start on March 5. But he kindly agreed to shift forward his film to March 10 to accommodate the last schedule of Blue."

Has India really changed? We are busy criticizing Slumdog Millionaire for showing India in poor light and are even ready to bash up those who defend the film saying it shows reality. As they say in our Bollywood movies – Sach hamesha kadwa hota hai (truth is always bitter). It is difficult for us to digest the fact that an outsider came to India and showed the world the non-photoshoped, non-filtered images of contemporary India. We have changed we say. “We are developing; we are not what we used to be decades ago, we no longer live in a patriarchal male dominated society, we are broad-minded” - we say. But is it true? Well, considering Sanjay Dutt’s recent statement it certainly isn’t...
