Danny Boyle buys new home for Slumdog Kid

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle has come to the rescue of childstars Mohammed Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali after they were left homeless following a slum clearing drive by Mumbai authorities.
Boyle has bought a new home for Ismail, who played young Salim in the Oscar winning film, and is planning to do the same for Rubina.After the huge success of Slumdog Millionaire, the film bosses had established the Jai Ho Trust last year (2008) to help fund their education. However, the kids' recent plight compelled Boyle and producer Christian Colson to fly to Mumbai this week to see how they could help the young stars.At a meeting in the city's JW Marriott hotel, Boyle announced he's purchased a new home for Ismail and is planning to do the same to put a roof over Ali's head too. "The homes are a concern. That is one of the reasons why we built the trust," Contactmusic quoted Boyle as saying.A spokesman for the Jai Ho Trust describes Ismail's new apartment as "comfortable, in a good neighbourhood (and) near his school", with the property costing "upwards of two million rupees" - 42,000 dollars

Ocar winning "Slumdog Millionaire" star Dev Patel's mother spoke of her son's off-screen love with his co-star, Freida Pinto, and said "life can't get better" for her son.Dev and Freida (pictured above) have always denied their movie romance spilled over into real life. But their pictures enjoying an intimate lunch date in Israel last week raised eyebrows, reports mirror.co.uk."First it was the film and now everything else seems to have slotted into place. Life can't get any better for him. Freida is really beautiful and I am really happy for them. Yes, we knew he was flying to Israel to see her," Dev's mother Anita Patel said.The couple are said to have started the relationship on the sets of Danny Boyle's film.

Slumdog Milliionaire on screen couple Dev Patel and Freida Pinto could not keep their real romance under wraps for long as they were spotted kissing during a dinner date in Israel.
Patel reportedly jetted to Tel Aviv, Israel to visit Pinto on the set of her new movie Miral, and the pair was later caught sharing a kiss during a romantic dinner, contactmusic.com reported.
The couple who played childhood sweethearts in the Oscar-winning movie, have frequently dismissed rumours they are dating for real, even after their co-star Anil Kapoor hinted they were romantically involved.
Kapoor had previously said, "When I meet them I feel there is something happening. (I think) this is the beginning of something exciting happening. They definitely make a great pair. Both of them look very good together."
And thereafter came a reaction from 24-year-old actress who insisted "We're not dating," while 18-year-old Patel added, "No, we're not seeing each other."

Did Rubina's father try to sell her?

In a startling revelation a British new website carried the report of Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali's father trying to sell her. In a sting operation conducted by the website it said that in a bid to escape poverty and life in the slum Rafiq Qureshi had put Rubina up for adoption demanding a whopping 200000 pounds from an Arabian family.Rafiq however denied the claim and said that he had gone to the hotel to meet an Arabian sheikh to discuss about an ad film and had no plans to sell off his daughter. The website had claimed that Rafiq had offered his daughter to the undercover journalists who were posing as the sheikh. Rafiq had said that he was doing this to have a better life for himself his family and Rubina. The website alleged that Rafiq also blamed Hollywood for pushing him into this deal and said his daughter was no ordinary kid now and deserved a Special life. Rubina’s biological mother, Kushi, however accused Qureshi of selling their child for money. She demanded that her daughter be sent to a boarding school for a better life. Well all we can say is that Rubina's life is not as ordinary as that of slum kid anymore.

Slumdog bosses donate £500k to educate poor kids in India

Slumdog Millionaire bosses have donated 500,000 pounds to kick off a programme aimed at educating poor kids in India.
The filmmakers have teamed up with Plan, an international kids' development organisation, to create the five-year programme targeted towards providing healthcare and education.
"Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai, it is only right that some of the success of the movie be ploughed back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference to some lives," the ‘Daily Express’ quoted director Danny Boyle as saying.
“Slumdog Millionaire has shown audiences around the world a snapshot of what life is like for one in six people on the planet,” added Plan U.K.'s chief executive, Marie Staunton.
"Education really is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty so we will focus the funds on getting children into school, keeping them there and ensuring they are healthy," she added.

"Slumdog" child actors to get new homes in India

The two main child actors from "Slumdog Millionaire" are to receive new homes from the Indian authorities after the small-budget movie swept the Oscars, winning eight Academy Awards.
The Mumbai homes will go to Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, who played the younger versions of the movie's central characters, Latika and Salim, in the rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a TV game show.
"These two children have brought laurels to the country, and we have been told that they live in slums, which cannot even be classified as housing," said Gautam Chatterjee, head of the state-run Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.
The movie, set in Mumbai, which is part of Maharashtra state, took home eight awards from the Oscars including best picture and best director for Britain's Danny Boyle.
But in the lead-up to Sunday's Oscars, the movie's success around the globe was overshadowed by objections in India to its name, which some Indians find offensive; its depiction of the lives of impoverished Indians; and the treatment of the cast.
There was an outcry after pictures emerged of the child stars living in squalor despite the $15 million movie earning about $100 million since its North American release in November.
But Boyle and producer Christian Colson have flatly rejected claims of exploiting children for the movie.
They said the children were paid above local Indian wages and enrolled in school for the first time with a fund set up to pay for their education, medical emergencies and "basic living costs."
Fox Searchlight Pictures, the specialty division of 20th Century Fox studios that is behind the film, paid for visas, travel and accommodations for nine children who were in the movie to fly to Los Angeles for the Oscars.

Danny Boyle”’’s Slumdog Millionaire has finally bagged 8 Oscars at Kodak theatre in Hollywood. Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches story was nominated in 10 categories

Two Mumbai slum kids set for fairytale journey to Oscars

They have never boarded a plane, lived in a pucca house or attended a proper school. But little Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail will still journey into a star-studded world as they attend the glitzy Oscars ceremony on February 22.
The lives of these Mumbai slum children have taken a fairytale spin just like the story of Slumdog Millionaire, the film by director Danny Boyle that they famously star in and which has bagged 10 nominations at the 81st Academy Awards.
On Thursday, they will fly off to walk the red carpet and rub shoulders with the who's who of Hollywood at the Oscars.
"I think we will win all the awards. We will win 10 out of 10," Azharuddin, 10, who essayed the role of a young Salim, the protagonist's brother, told a news channel.
Rubina, 9, who played young Latika, added: "I don't know anything now. I will see what happens there."
Just a few days back, their dream to attend one of the most glamorous events of the world was jeopardised by their poverty stricken life. Their parents were not keen on sending them to the Oscars and instead wanted the plane fare to be utilised for other necessities.
However, after a change of plan, Rubina will be escorted by her uncle and Azharuddin will be accompanied by his mother to the event.
"I was thinking that I would love to go but never thought this will come true through Rubina," said Rubina's uncle.
Echoing similar sentiments, Azharuddin's mother expressed good wishes for the director.
Not many moons ago these kids from the stark, dingy bylanes of a Mumbai slum only dreamt of living a comfortable life. And with ailing parents and hardly any money for survival, that seemed far from reality. But today they have been catapulted to celebrity status not only in their locality but in the entire world.
Their dreams have changed too. Rubina and Azharuddin now want to become actors even though they continue to live in their makeshift homes in a slum in the Bandra neighbourhood. Thanks to the director, they are also going to a proper school and might move into better houses soon.
For these two, a life out of the slum will be a long journey encompassing hardships, but with this opportunity they will get to enjoy the best of the world.
Another kid, Mozhim Shakim Sheikh Qureshi, who played a cripple in the movie, however, was not as lucky as his friends. The 13-year-old got injured while jumping off a train. His left arm is badly damaged and will take at least a month for him to recover.

Jai Ho: AR Rahman bags two Oscars

Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman became the first Indian to bag two Oscars for his work in British filmmaker Danny Boyle's much acclaimed "Slumdog Millionaire", which tells the rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slum dweller. He got his first Oscar on the night of the 81st Academy Awards here for best original score for the Mumbai-based drama.The composer was overwhelmed and interspersed his speech with Hindi as well as Tamil on receiving the coveted trophy here Sunday."There is a dialogue from an old Hindi film - "Mere paas ma hai" - which means I have nothing but a mother. My mother is here, I have her blessings. I am glad she could be here," said Rahman.He ended the acceptance speech by saying "God is great" in Tamil, something he says after winning every award. He shared the second Oscar for best original song for the film's theme number "Jai Ho" with noted Indian lyricist Gulzar. "All my life I had a choice between hate and love. I chose love and I am here," said Rahman after receiving his second golden statuette. Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman's wife used to wake up in the middle of the night and say "I want you to win an Oscar". Now he has won two. It's not only her dream that has turned into reality at the 81st annual Academy Awards, it's a milestone for Bollywood too.Bollywood celebrated as Rahman bagged the Oscars for best original score in "Slumdog Millionaire" and its theme song "Jai Ho".Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap is all praises for the singer-composer. He said: "This is a happy moment for all of us. We all should celebrate because he (Rahman) has made us proud. Finally we did it!Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who has worked with Rahman for his films "Rang De Basanti" and "Delhi-6", says the singer-composer truly deserved the award."I am proud and so happy that it's A.R. He brought north and south India together when he started composing music and now he has successfully bridged the gap between the east and the west. It's incredible! There are more people in the west who know him now than they know about his work," Mehra told.Rahman, the first Indian musician to win the annual Academy Award, was listed for three of the film's ten Oscar nominations - one for his original score and two others for songs composed by him, "O Saya" and "Jai Ho".According to singer Mohit Chauhan who has sung in Rahman's latest hit composition "Masakalli" from "Delhi-6", this Oscar win is an inspiration for the Indian music industry."It is very encouraging. Rahman is a great inspiration for all the musicians in the country. And it's a great honour also. Our films are going places and so is our music. We can look ahead to good times," said Chauhan.Veteran filmmaker and critic Aziz Mirza says: "The international recognition that Rahman has earned for himself makes every Indian proud. He deserves it more than anybody else for his wholehearted dedication to music. It's a rare honour. I congratulate Rahman." Southern actor R. Madhavan feels Rahman should have won an Oscar the very first time he composed music because he truly deserves it. Actress Divya Dutta hails the composer and says she is extremely proud of his win. "Like every Indian, I am very happy about the win. I was sure Rahman will come back with the award. The film was amazing," said Dutta. Before this, only two Indians have won the Oscar in its 80 year history - Satyajit Ray was given the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992 and Bhanu Athaiya won the best costume design Oscar along with John Mollo for the 1982 film "Gandhi."

Rahman along with Bollywood singer Sukhwinder Singh has been invited to open the 81st annual Academy Awards night, on February 21 in Los Angeles

Danny Boyle's film Slumdog... that recently swept the Golden Globes and created a huge buzz at the prestigious SAG awards is a favourite for the Oscars as well.Meanwhile, Rahman is working on the song to adapt it to the live orchestra for his stage performance. 'Slumdog Millionaire' actor Dev Patel might have become a international celebrity with his debut film but that does not save him from embarrassing moments in real life.
The actor has revealed that he was answering nature's call when his film 'Slumdog Millionaire' won the 'Best Ensemble' award at the Screen Actor's Guild award ceremony this week and had to make a mad rush to get to the stage on time to join his co-stars, Contactmusic reported.
The British actor's ill timed toilet break resulted in him dashing through the audience in the Shrine Auditorium to reach the stage. He recalls, "I literally ran and I broke someone's champagne glass on the way."
The 18-year-old actor has been taken from anonymity and propelled into stardom with his first film 'Slumdog Millionaire' which has won 10 Oscar nominations.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has slammed Danny Boyle's Golden Globe award winning underdog drama “Slumdog Millionaire” for showing India in poor light.“If 'Slumdog Millionaire' projects India as Third World dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations, ” Amitabh said in a posting on his blog Wednesday from Paris, France.“Its just that the 'Slumdog Millioanire' idea authored by an Indian and conceived and cinematically put together by a westerner, gets creative global recognition, ” he added.The 66-year-old also talked about the changing trend in recognition of Indian cinema.“The commercial escapist world of Indian cinema had vociferously battled for years, on the attention paid and the adulation given to the legendary Satyajit Ray... and not a word of appreciation for the entertaining mass-oriented box office blockbusters that were being churned out from Mumbai.“Ray portrayed reality. While, the other - escapism, fantasy and incredulous posturing. Unimpressive for Cannes and Berlin and Venice (film festivals), ” he explained.He further wrote: “But look how rapidly all that is changing. Dedicated TV channels running Hindi cinema on prime timings. Premieres at Leicester Square (referring to 'Chandni Chowk To China'), the home of all Hollywood royalty, thronged by hundreds on the street in cold biting weather.”

Slumdog Millionaire cast coming to India

The film is set in the city and has been shot extensively here. Director Danny Boyle, Twentieth Century Fox co-chairman Jim Gianopulous and lead actor Dev Patel, along with the other members of the cast, will attend the premiere. Even more excitingly, the evening the premiere takes place here coincides with the announcement of Oscar nominations; this happens on 22 January at 7.30 pm IST. ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ releases in India with more than 200 prints across the country (in both Hindi and English) on 23 January. Trade insiders say the Hindi version of the film, titled ‘Slumdog Crorepati', will have a wider release and penetrate non-metro areas as well. The film has been dubbed in Hindi by its original cast. The cast and the crew will be coming to India two days before the premiere and will be visiting Mumbai and Delhi. They will also be attending a charity dinner apart from a busy media itinerary. "The Mumbai premiere is a special event for all those associated with ‘Slumdog Millionaire'. After the film has released in US and UK and has become what it has, it is like a homecoming for the film's cast and crew. We are planning a gala event with a special list of invitees,'' Fox Star Studio India CEO Vijay Singh said. "The cast and the crew will be in Mumbai when the Oscar nominations are going to be announced. We are all the more hopeful after the film's performance at Golden Globe.''
